Dorothy's Diary: Birthday Memories
My birthday is coming up at the end of the month, August 30th. Triple Virgo.
I grew up in a musical home with an Austrian mom and an American father. Birthdays were quite special in our house and we looked forward to them with great anticipation. My mom would make her special "healthy" birthday cake and buy our favorite honey vanilla ice cream from the health food store. The neighborhood kids (who came for all the holidays and birthdays) would come over to join in the fun.
My mom would pick lots of fresh flowers from the garden - especially her favorite roses - and lay them all around the birthday cake. Then add more in vases.
Next, all the instruments would come out. My dad was seated at the piano. Ben and Paul got out their violins, Chris got out his cello. Some of the kids would get pots, pans, lids and silverware (the percussion section). And then the concert would begin. My dad would play the happy birthday song in 3 or 4 keys. He would jazz it up and improvise. And my mom, my five siblings, and all the neighborhood kids would sing happy birthday to me over and over again. Each time, their voices getting louder and louder. You could feel the love and happiness vibrating in the room. And I would feel very special.
Then it was a mad dash to the birthday table to see who could get to the cake and ice cream first.
To this day, I still love my birthdays. I still look at it as a celebration of life. I try to do something I love on my birthday.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do this year, but I want to do something special for myself. And I'm going to be filled with gratitude and happiness for my improved health, for the new friends I've made through this challenge, and for every single good thing in my life. (And yes, there will be a special toast for my bed and my bathtub.)
Thank you all for being part of my journey and my life!
