I baked a really ugly, but very yummy cake.
Luckily, practice makes perfect.
Or in this case, practice made lopsided perfection.
Hey, it was gluten and dairy-free. I get points for that, right?
Oh well, I learned that cakes aren't my thing.
I really prefer cookies anyway.
I went to a beautiful wedding
which is where the lopsided cake came into play
and where I obsessively took photos of rose petals and wine glasses.
Moved to Seattle (really to Kenmore)
and into a house with a pear tree and two apple trees in the backyard.
Took in the Seattle sights.
Walked around like a tourist with my camera out.
Started to fall in love with the Northwest.
Check out the birds camouflaging themselves on the train tracks.
As my mother's daughter, I should know what those birds are
but I don't.
Came a bit too close to this train for my own comfort.
I'm pretty sure this was the moment I decided I love Seattle.
Or perhaps it was this one.
And finally,
last week I began classes at Bastyr.
And that is the end.
By which I mean, the beginning.

Actually, those little birds are killdeer. Little ringed plovers only have one collar stripe.

The lopsided cake also looks good - and agree with Maggie, would have gladly eaten it! I've only made one layer cake, which was really good and that I plan to debut on my blog eventually. It was my brother's birthday cake. It's really simple, too. Not complicated at all.

Yes, those birds are killdeer. We have then in Texas too (which is actually surprising, given that the climates are so dissimilar). Gorgeous photos. I especially love the tree trunk. And that cake looks tasty, even if it wasn't gorgeous!
Wonderful post, Iris. So glad you're loving Seattle. I fell in love with it when I was there too. I have a really cool friend there you should meet if you want. I'm settling back into SF after a long road trip and getting back on my gluten/dairy-free diet, so I'll be checking back in on your more :)
Such a great post, Iris! I love your sentiments and all your photos. We're big fans of killdeer here, and love how they pretend to be hurt if one accidentally gets near their in-ground nest. They detract your from their eggs and babies. They are so sweet!
